The national parent club, German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America) is partnered with AKC Canine Health Foundation and the Orthopedic Foundation For Animals to work toward a healthier breed of dog.
The following are strongly recommended health clearances for GSPs and are the GSPCA requirement tests to obtain a CHIC #:
- Hip Dysplasia : OFA or PennHip
- Congenital Cardiac : Clearance by Cardiologist or Specialist
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy : Eye clearance performed annually until age 6, then every two years afterward (CERF).
- Cone Degeneration : DNA based test that provides, for the first time, a method to unequivocally identify Cone Degeneration Disease (CD) in the German Shorthaired Pointer. Although the disease is rare in general, within an affected line it is important to control the gene frequency so as to prevent producing puppies affected with the disease.
